Supervised Surgery Preparation

When you join the LaFerla Family Eye Care family, we are with you for all your vision needs, even those that extend beyond our practice. If you’re planning on undergoing laser eye surgery, we’re eager to guide you through the entire process, from initial questions to follow-up appointments.

Freeing yourself from eyeglasses and contact lenses has its appeal, but there’s a lot to consider before making a final decision. Our laser eye surgery consultations keep you informed about the entire process and co-manage your recovery with a recommended ophthalmologist.

The Consultation Process

During the consultation, our main goal is to determine if you are an appropriate candidate for laser eye surgery. Your current ocular health and previous medical conditions are major factors for determining your eligibility.

We also want to measure the thickness of your cornea and how stable your vision is. Before we can recommend laser eye surgery, we’ll want to see a static vision prescription through several eye exams.

If we determine that you’re a suitable candidate, we will go over the limitations of refractive eye surgery and what you can expect during the procedure. Once the decision is made to move forward, we’ll introduce you to an eye surgeon who aligns with our high level of care and attention.

Your Recovery Partner

After your surgery, we’ll schedule you for follow-up appointments at LaFerla Family Eye Care. These appointments help us manage your eye health following your surgery and make sure you see vision improvements.

These appointments will take place 1 day, 1 week, 1 month, 3 months, and 1 year after your surgery, making room for additional appointments as needed. We recommend yearly comprehensive eye examinations thereafter.

Types of Surgery Procedures

During a laser eye surgery consult, we will answer any questions you have about surgery and specific methods that are used. Your surgery will be completed by an ophthalmologist, but you’ll have the LaFerla Family Eye Care team as a resource the whole way through.

The 2 most common and successful types of eye surgeries that we recommend are LASIK and PRK. We’ll make sure that you are confident about the type of surgery that best suits your vision, and we’ll go over the risks and benefits of each.

LASIK

Considered the most popular form of refractive eye surgery in the world, laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) was developed to minimize the likelihood of infection and reduce post-surgery recovery time.

During the procedure, the ophthalmologist creates a tiny flap in the outer layers of the cornea, then carefully folds it back to reveal the middle layers. The surgeon then reshapes the middle corneal layers using a precision laser to correct your refractive error. Once your cornea has been reshaped, the flap is folded back into place, completing the process.

LASIK patients typically enjoy clear vision within 24 hours of their operation and can expect their vision to fully stabilize within one week.

Photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) is a type of laser eye surgery that predates LASIK. The major difference between PRK and LASIK is the initial method by which the doctor gains access to the corneal tissue.

During PRK, the outer layer of the cornea (called the epithelium) is removed, and a computerized laser is used to correct your refraction error. With PRK, the healing process involves giving the epithelium time to repair itself, a process that takes a few days.

Though LASIK is the most popular form of laser eye surgery, PRK has its advantages. It’s particularly well suited for patients with thin or irregular corneas or those who are more likely to suffer complications from the flap becoming dislodged during the healing process.
