Helping Your Child Succeed

A child succeeding in school is largely dependent on them being able to see their teacher, the front of the room, and their peers. And that’s why we want to view your child’s vision each and every year as they develop. By making sure their vision is sharp, we give them the advantage to excel.

LaFerla Family Eye Care is a family optometry practice that helps give children the chance to see clearly. Our children’s eye exams gauge young vision and test for signs of changes.

Eye Exam Frequency for Children

The American Optometric Association outlines a responsible exam schedule for children. This schedule is for youth with normally developing vision. You may have to see us more often if your child is showing signs of vision problems.

  • Your infant’s first eye exam should occur at about 6 months old.
  • Make sure your child has at least one eye exam between 2 – 5 years old.
  • Young people from the age of 6 – 19 should get an eye exam annually.

Symptoms of Changing Vision

The human eye usually experiences the greatest change in shape between the ages of 8-20. Myopia, or nearsightedness, is becoming increasingly common in pre-teens and adolescents. The best way to address these vision problems is with regular eye check-ups. Come see our optometrists if your child seems like they have difficulty seeing clearly.

Potential Signs of Vision Problems

Some signs you might notice if your child has a vision issue include:

  • Frequent eye rubbing
  • Squinting or head tilting
  • Holding reading materials very close
  • Covering one eye
  • Complaints of headaches or fatigue
  • Losing place when reading

What We Test in Children

Many factors contribute to healthy, functioning vision in your child’s eyes. It’s our job at LaFerla Family Eye Care to make sure your child is growing up with clear eyesight. During your child’s eye exam, we test for several indicators of a healthy ocular system.

Vision Skills We Evaluate

  • Visual acuity: seeing clearly both close and far away
  • Eye focusing: maintain focus as distance changes
  • Hand-eye coordination: combining vision with motor function
  • Eye tracking: being able to lock onto a target
  • Eye teaming: using both eyes together

Correcting Young Vision

One of the most important things you can give your child is the ability to see as clearly as possible. Our optical dispensary keeps a large inventory of children’s eyeglasses and contact lenses for youths of all ages.

Let us help your child find eyesight they can rely on confidently. Nothing makes us happier than seeing a family grow up together with healthy, happy eyes.
